Rail transport

Côte d’Ivoire has a 1,260 km railway line linking it to Burkina Faso, 639 km of which is on national territory and 621 km in Burkina Faso.

The operation of the rail infrastructure has been entrusted to SITARAIL since 1994. This change of operator enabled freight traffic to double in the space of 5 years, rising from 504,000 tonnes in 1996 to over one million tonnes in 2001. Since then, activity has hovered around one million tonnes of goods a year. In 2022 as a whole, rail freight traffic stood at 886,815 tonnes.

Rehabilitation work on the Abidjan-Ouagadougou-Kaya railway (Mali) and its extension to Tambao (Burkina-Faso) was launched in 2017.

However, the development of rail transport remains limited due to the inadequacy and obsolescence of infrastructure and operating equipment.

As part of the drive to improve urban mobility, the city of Abidjan will have its first metro line by 2025, 37.5 km long on the north-south axis linking the municipalities of Port-Bouët and Anyama. The main structures to be built as part of this project are: 20 stations; 40 platforms; 21 rail/road bridges; 1 viaduct; 40 pedestrian footbridges, etc.
